Another Day, Another Poem

Family Bed

You and me and sweetness in the middle
Fits a little different than when she was little
A leg tossed over mine that keeps me from falling back
You’re angled just so to make room for the cat
Her braids under my chin, I turn to kiss your wrist
And wonder if it’s the last time that I’ll wake up like this
Soon “family bed” will be another thing that makes her roll her eyes
Another golden thread of childhood that snaps right before mine
Before I can meditate too long on how the cuts come quick and deep
I press my face into her braids again and will myself to sleep
