“Is it not 2025?” you ask?
Well loves, being an author in the age of social media means developing a lot of skills. Whether they involve finding the best lighting in your living room or learning to speak with cheerful casualness to your front facing camera, what the new skills boil down to taking yourself and your work seriously enough to try and get keep folks attention. We must leave our writing nooks thrust yourself into the public marketplace saying “I’m fun! I’m Charming! Root for me! Read my book! (And pay for it please.)”
Doing this is a big reach even for the most extroverted and confident of writers. (I can claim to be the former, if not the latter.) We make attempts at comedy, trendy dances, fashion, and more in the hope that readers connect with us and our work. And while it’s terrifying honestly, it can be pretty fun.
But thanks to aggressive capitalism and a sharp national (back)slide toward fascism, I’ve taken myself off of places that didn’t sit right with my spirit: namely Twitter (before it was X even) and on January 19th of this year Facebook and Instagram. The timing was not coincidental. If/when that TikTok sale ever goes through, I’ll probably be hopping off that app, too. I’m too old for Tumblr and too inconsistent for Substack. So what’s and author to do if she wants to keep connecting with her readers? SEIZE THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION!
Hence this blog. He be chattin’! What to expect? Exactly what it says on the tin: my random thoughts and links to things that genuinely peak my interest. I’ll be sharing snippets of my writing life; links to fundraisers and petitions I find important, as well as articles I find interesting. There will also photos I take and recipes I try, and despite my best efforts, many typos. Apologies in advance.
Will there be other stuff? Probably. THERE ARE NO RULES! WHERE WE’RE GOING WE DON’T NEED ROADS. I hope you’ll join me on the ride. Let’s blog like it’s 2006 and legacy media is imploding around us.
See you on the flippity flop.
Besos,
Eden
